Dashboard
Removed shortcuts section and replaced with flight activity charts. The combo boxes above the charts reflect data in the horizontal bar chart only, the line chart shows the last 6 months worth of flight activity. Use the bar chart to get quick totals based on the options selected. Now you can get time in a particular aircraft, a certain category or class as well as within a certain time period. Combine some options to get an increadible custom view of your time.
Also view Aircraft Maintenance items for any of your aircraft where you have a maintenance item defined. You can define aircraft maintenance items in the aircraft profiles. Keep track of annuals, oil changes, IFR and other maintenance items.
View your custom pilot currency items in the currency section on the dashboard. You can set up custom currency items in the Pilot Profile section. Up to 5 date based custom pilot currency items can be specified.
View random member aircraft and flight pictures, click on the View My Pictures link to view any of your own pictures and manage them, click on the More Member Pictures to see a bunch more random member pictures.

Flights and Flights Listing
Add images to your flight records to remember your flights even more. You can also add a link to your flight if you want. Remember to share your pictures so others can enjoy the places you've been and the things you've seen.
The flights listing now has a Pics column to allow you to quickly and easily sort your flights by whether or not they have an image associated with them.
Flight search option, you can now specify an aviation associate when searching for flights. This makes it easy to find flights you made with a certain instructor or safety pilot. If you are a CFI, you'll want to check that option in the Pilot Profile so you can add your students to your list of aviation associates and be able to search for them with the Flight Search option.

Aircraft Profiles
You can now add images and links to your aircraft profiles. This helps you remember the aircraft you fly or have flown forever. Share your pictures with other members so they can also see what other members are flying.
Add aircraft maintenance items like annuals, oil changes, 100 hour inspections, IFR etc. You can add maintenance items by date or by hours limit. Be sure to check the Notify option in the pilot profile section if you want to be sent an email of pilot currency and aircraft maintenance items. If you want to view your aircraft maintenance items on the dashboard, make sure you set that preference in the pilot profile section.

Pilot Profile
Add custom pilot currency items, set your pilot currency and aircraft maintenance notification options, set whether or not you wish to view aircraft maintenance items on the dashboard screen and upload any important pilot or logbook related images like signoffs, endorsements, certificates and more. You can also specify important links you wish to appear in your pilot profile. Now you can ensure all your flight time and important signoffs and endorsements are safe, accessable and printable from anywhere.

NOTICE - Aviation Associates have been changed so that you must pick a defined associate type. We beleive we have all the necessary associate types covered, so if you find a situation where one of the defined types just won't work, let us know. You need to edit each aviation associate and select one of the defined associate types. If you are a CFI, you will see a Student associate type.

September 2007 Updates

Flight Search (NEW!)
A new feature called Flight Search has been added to the dashboard shortcuts section, flights listing screen and reports section. This cool new feature allows you to search for flights using a from and through date or time specific period (30 days, 90 days etc) and up to 2 logbook categories, aircraft attribute, make and model. What's really cool about this search feature is that you can not only view just the flights you want, but you can create a logbook snapshot of those flights and see all the totals. You can extract or print this information as well.

Flights Listing Screen (CHANGE)
The flights listing screen now shows the total number of flight records found in AvJournal at the top of the list. There is also a search button in the top right corner of the screen to enable easy searching of flight records.

JAA Departure and Arrival Time Auto Calculate Total Duration (NEW!)
Our JAA users asked for this and now they've got it. When you enter your Departure and Arrival times (HH:MM in 24 hr format), the Total Duration is automatically calculated for you. You can override the calculated time if so desired.

August 2007 Updates

Import Feature (NEW!)
A new menu item called “Tools” has been added which will lead you through the process of importing logbook and aircraft data into AvJournal. A CSV (comma separated values) or an XLS (Excel) file may be specified for import, the application will automatically detect the type of file and handle it appropriately. The import process will allow you to upload your file, specify how many records you wish to preview, what type of separator is used and whether or not the first row is header/table names or actual data for import. The preview page allows you to see whether your data is formatted properly for import. Then the user can map AvJournal fields to import file fields in a very easy and straightforward method. All the import file fields will be populated in a list box next to each AvJournal field. The user simply selects the desired import filed as it relates to the AvJournal filed. At the bottom of the field mapping screen, the user can choose to delete all existing flight and aircraft records before importing. This is helpful if a user has been adding bogus flights and aircraft during the trial period or if an import was not mapped correctly the first time and a “re-do” is necessary.

What You Should Know About The Import Functionality

  • Do use the import feature to get non-existing flight and aircraft data into AvJournal. It’s an easy and quick way to move your data in a csv or xls file into the secure and accessible world AvJournal
  • CAUTION: Do not choose the delete all records option for flights and aircraft if you have real, live, meaningful, accurate flight and aircraft data that already exists in AvJournal. Maybe you’ve been adding flights from a certain point in time up to now and want to get all your previous flight time and aircraft data stored in a file uploaded into AvJournal
  • WARNING: Choosing the delete all existing flight or aircraft records option is unforgiving and cannot be undone! Any and all flight and aircraft records/data will be vaporized, wiped off the face of the earth, sucked into a data guzzling black hole never to be seen again! Use these options only if you wish to delete existing data and have only the data from an import file loaded into AvJournal
  • You will have to edit each aircraft profile created from an import, set the appropriate aircraft attributes and save the record. Aircraft profiles are relied upon to calculate and display accurate statistics and report totals. Aircraft profiles created by the import feature will be shown in the aircraft listing with gray colored text, this indicates that the aircraft profile has not been updated or saved

Aircraft Attributes (CHANGES)

  • Aircraft Category (NEW) Added an aircraft category selection option so that aircraft profiles can store this information and the reporting options can display this information
  • Aircraft Class (NEW) Added an aircraft class selection option so that aircraft profiles can store this information and the reporting options can display this information. The SEL, SES, MEL and MES class options will now be used to determine whether an aircraft profile is single engine or multi engine. Existing aircraft profiles (prior to this update) used the Engines option to signify whether the aircraft was a single or multi engine. This field is still utilized in the database and throughout the application but any new aircraft profiles will utilize the aircraft class options described above
  • Engines (REMOVED) We removed the Engines select list due to the fact that the new aircraft class selection option will be used to determine whether an aircraft is a single engine or multi engine aircraft. See aircraft class info above
  • Engine Type (MODIFIED) We added Turboshaft and Ramjet engine types
  • Wheel Configuration (CHANGED LABEL) Wheel Configuration was changed to Undercarriage and two new options were added, they are Skids and N/A
  • Wing Configuration (MODIFIED) We added Rotor and N/A
  • Engine Attributes (MODIFIED) We added a Supercharged attribute
  • Aircraft Attributes (MODIFIED) We added a Wooden Airframe attribute
  • Undercarriage Attributes (MODIFIED) We added Fixed, Pontoons and Flying Hull attributes and changed the Float Hull attribute to Floats
  • Other Attributes (MODIFIED) We added Historical, STOL, VTOL, >12500 LBS, and Light Sport Aircraft attributes and removed the Gyro Copter, Glider, Balloon, Blip/Airship, Powered Paraglider, Hang Glider, Paraglider, and Flight Simulator due to being redundant and rarely used or needed. The addition of aircraft categories and classes made these unnecessary as well
  • Profile Options (NEW) We added this option so that users with many aircraft profiles can inactivate aircraft profiles that are no longer actively used for logging flights. The inactive aircraft profiles will now trigger flights and aircraft to appear with an orange text in the aircraft and flight listing screens for easy identification. Inactive aircraft profiles will not be listed in the aircraft selection list for NEW flights, Now you won’t have to weed through many unused and inactive aircraft profiles when adding new flights. All reporting and statistics will still utilize all aircraft profile data. Existing flights when edited, will display the inactive aircraft as last saved as well as all other aircraft profiles whether active or inactive
USER NOTICE: It is recommended that all users check/edit each aircraft profile to ensure all new attribute options are set properly and as necessary. This section of the application was enhanced so spending some time checking your aircraft profiles is necessary to ensure accurate statistics and reporting.

Currency Options and View (MODIFIED)
We added a Tailwheel currency definition in the pilot profile, currency screen. This will enable pilots to track and be notified of tailwheel currency. Please edit your currency setting in your pilot profile and set the Tailwheel currency preferences as desired (3 landings in 90 days). We added a 30 day warning on all currency items, now you will see an orange “warning” when a currency item is 30 days from expiring. Currency items were broken out into Single and Mulit to show currency as it relates to single engine and multi engine aircraft.

Reporting By Attributes (MODIFIED)
The aircraft attributes report definition screen has been modified to include all new/changed aircraft attributes and report the related time totals and counts for all.

Flight Comments Pop-Up (NEW)
Added a pop-up box that displays flight comments when a flight is hovered over on the dashboard or flights listing screen. This adds a quick and easy way to view the details of a flight and helps in finding a particular flight by allowing you to view comments without having to view the actual flight entry/edit screen.

Logbook Snapshot or Extract (MODIFIED)
The logbook snapshot option was modified to include only one header row for defining columns of flight data to make exported data easily importable without editing and formatting the headers.
